Minister announces three new ports to boost Pakistan's blue economy

KARACHI – Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has unveiled plans to build three new ports in Pakistan to give the country’s blue economy a major push and ensure sustainable growth for the next century.

Speaking in Karachi, the minister said he was initially hesitant to take charge of the ministry but gained confidence after learning that it was generating billions in profit. “We have changed the image of the Maritime Affairs Ministry for the better,” he said, adding that Pakistan’s Container Port Performance Index ranking improved from 98th to 9th, showing massive progress.

He noted that the country’s economy could have suffered if its ports were not performing well. “Foreign investors are coming to Pakistan, while local investors are going abroad — I urge them to invest in our ports instead,” he added.

Outlining a long-term vision, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said his ministry has planned for the next 100 years (2047–2147) to guide the nation under a well-defined vision. “By 2047, Pakistan’s ports will be operating at 100% capacity. After Ports 1, 2, and 3, we will begin work on Ports 4, 5, and 6,” he said.

The minister emphasized that three new ports would be established at carefully selected locations, ensuring that no housing or non-maritime projects are developed there. “Wherever we see water, we start building housing societies,  that mindset must change,” he remarked.
