PTI alleges medical negligence as Imran Khan suffers reported vision loss

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on Thursday accused the state of committing a “crime” against former prime minister Imran Khan, claiming that the incarcerated party founder has suffered severe vision loss in his right eye due to alleged medical negligence.
The matter surfaced during proceedings at the Supreme Court, where PTI counsel Advocate Salman Safdar submitted a report stating that Imran Khan had informed him he was left with only 15 per cent vision in his right eye.
Speaking to the media outside the apex court alongside Imran’s sister Aleema Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, Raja alleged that the former premier’s deteriorating eye condition was mishandled during his incarceration at Adiala Jail.
“A crime has been committed against Imran Khan, and this state has committed this crime,” Raja said, naming former Adiala Jail Superintendent Abdul Ghafoor Anjum in connection with the alleged negligence.
He added that Imran had given “special instructions” to initiate legal proceedings against Anjum.

According to PTI leaders, Imran began experiencing pain in his eye in November, and by December had completely lost vision in his right eye.
Raja claimed that despite repeated complaints, the former prime minister was only provided eye drops typically used for irritation and was neither shifted to a hospital nor examined by a qualified ophthalmologist at the time.
He further alleged that Anjum was replaced as jail superintendent on January 16 as the situation worsened, but said there was an additional delay before a specialist from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Dr Arif, examined Imran at Adiala Jail on January 26.
Raja said that following the examination, the doctor advised immediate hospital treatment.
Imran was subsequently taken to PIMS in Islamabad, where he received medical care, including an injection.

He described the diagnosis mentioned in the report as “retinal occlusion.”
According to Raja, Imran has since regained between 10 to 15 per cent vision in the affected eye and is currently able to detect light, though full vision has not returned.
Calling the situation “painful and terrifying,” the PTI leader said the party and the family remained unaware of the precise medical condition affecting Imran’s eyesight.
He demanded that the former prime minister be examined without delay by doctors trusted by his family and party.
“The ongoing situation is unacceptable,” Raja said, urging immediate and transparent medical intervention.
