ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to eliminating AIDS and ensuring that all citizens have access to essential healthcare services.
In his message on World AIDS Day, the prime minister vowed that the government will continue all possible efforts to safeguard public health and eradicate major health threats, including HIV/AIDS.
The PM noted that this year’s theme, “Overcoming Barriers and Changing Attitudes Toward AIDS,” highlights the need for unwavering determination in protecting health and human dignity despite challenges, diseases, and social inequalities.
Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the HIV epidemic continues to test health systems worldwide and serves as a reminder that adopting a comprehensive strategy is vital for an effective response. He stated that improved access to treatment, use of modern medical tools, and strengthened community support are essential in combating the disease.
He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to strengthening the national healthcare system and ensuring that the voices and needs of people living with HIV are prioritized. “Health protection is the fundamental right of every citizen,” he said, adding that the government is actively working to provide equitable prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care, particularly for vulnerable populations.
The prime minister highlighted ongoing federal, provincial, and local government collaboration in implementing concrete measures against the spread of HIV. He also stressed the urgent need to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with the disease.
Shehbaz Sharif underscored the importance of expanding access to treatment for high-risk groups, eliminating gender-based disparities, preventing mother-to-child transmission, ensuring safe blood supply, and reducing spread among people who use drugs—key areas that remain top priorities.
Calling for a collective national effort, the premier said that only through unity, institutional cooperation, and shared responsibility can Pakistan overcome existing barriers and accelerate progress toward eliminating AIDS. He urged the nation to renew its resolve this World AIDS Day to ensure that no social or administrative barrier hinders this vital struggle.
