Punjab govt orders colour-coded trash bins across public, commercial spaces
Pakistan
Environmental Protection Agency has issued a formal notification
LAHORE (Dunya News) The Punjab government has ordered the introduction of colour-coded trash bins across the province, following the waste-management systems used in developed countries.
According to the official directive, coloured waste bins will be installed in all markets, shopping malls, commercial centres, government offices and educational institutions.
In the first phase, approval for implementing the “Smart Waste Management Process” was granted last September for both public and private educational institutions across Punjab.
Officials said that failure to install colour-coded bins will result in legal action under environmental protection laws. Yellow bins will be used for paper, packaging material and recyclable waste, while green bins will be designated for bottles, glass pieces and discarded laboratory items.
As per the notification, grey bins will hold fruit peels, leftover food, leaves and rotten vegetables, whereas red bins will be used for metal waste and other metallic items.
Orange bins will be designated for plastic waste so it can be recycled. The purpose of this modern system is to reduce waste volume and promote eco-friendly practices.
The Environmental Protection Agency has issued a formal notification, stating that different types of waste must be disposed of in their respective coloured bins. Educational institutions may also contact the Punjab Waste Management helpline (1139) for waste collection.
Additionally, the Local Government and Community Development Department will play its role in managing the colour-coded bins, while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will ensure implementation of the directive.
