LAHORE (Dunya News) - Former prime minister and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif said that the people rejected the politics of “hate, lies, and abuse” in the recently held by-elections.

Addressing the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) on Wednesday, he said that disrespect and chaos have been defeated in the by-polls.

Nawaz Sharif said that in 2017 Pakistan was progressing rapidly, but “they pushed the country toward bankruptcy.”

He said that had the pace of development continued, Pakistan would have held a strong position globally. He added that the consequences of the previous government’s actions were being borne by the entire nation, saying “after our departure, the country was destroyed.”

“The inflation remained at 3 percent during my tenure, but the current situation has left Pakistan dependent on IMF decisions,” the PML-N president said.

He praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, saying they had surpassed him in public service.

“Shehbaz Sharif is a loving brother; I help as much as I can. The people voted for us on the basis of performance,” he added.

Addressing the ceremony, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said that she bowed her head in gratitude for the party’s victory.

She said that PML-N bravely faced challenges and never boycotted the elections in every circumstances.

Maryam added that the people now clearly understand the difference between slogans and real performance.

Referring to the Daska by-election, she said that PML-N succeeded despite alleged rigging.

She noted that Nawaz Sharif is the only person in Pakistan’s history to become prime minister three times, yet faced conspiracies in every term.

“For 40 years, they tried to end his politics, but they themselves disappeared,” she added.

She blamed the PTI’s government for widespread destruction and said when her administration took charge, Pakistan was being labeled as a potential defaulter. “Today, inflation has come down from 40 percent to 4 percent,” she claimed.

She said that the PML-N delivered in every era and has a bright future. She urged newly elected lawmakers to serve their constituencies and prayed for Nawaz Sharif’s long life.
