ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday ordered the immediate conduct of local government elections in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).

A five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja announced the reserved judgment, instructing the relevant branch to issue the election schedule without delay.

In its ruling, the Commission declared Section 15 of the Islamabad Local Government Act unconstitutional, noting that the selection of reserved seats by the Secretary of Local Government is in violation of the Constitution.

The verdict further clarified that the appointment of the Returning Officer falls strictly within the constitutional and legal jurisdiction of the Election Commission, reinforcing the Commission’s authority over the electoral process.
