ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has announced that the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will be abolished on November 27 this year.
Speaking during the Senate session on Saturday, Tarar said that under the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, the titles of Marshal of the Air Force and Marshal of the Naval Force will be introduced.
He clarified that the authority to confer these titles will rest with the parliament, not the prime minister.
Tarar further stated that the rank and title of Field Marshal will be given constitutional protection, and only parliament will have the power to revoke it.
27th Amendment draft: Army chief to become Chief of Defence Forces
He added that it has been proposed that the Army Chief will serve as the Chief of Defence Forces.
Explaining the distinction, the minister said that Field Marshal is an honourary rank and title, whereas the Army Chief is a constitutional post with a five-year tenure. “The Army Chief will assume the responsibilities of the Chief of Defence Forces,” he said.
Azam Nazeer Tarar also informed the Senate that the incumbent Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza will retire on November 27.
