ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The 64th death anniversary of legendary Urdu writer and the linguist Maulvi Abdul Haq famously known as Baba-e-Urdu is being observed today (Saturday).
Born in 1870, he was educated first in Punjab and then at the M.A.O. college, Aligarh. He went to Hyderabad in 1895 and became head of Dar-ut-Tarjuma. In 1912 he was made the General Secretary of the Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu.
He dedicated his entire life for the promotion of Urdu language. After his migration to Pakistan, he re-organized the Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu in Karachi.
He was a prolific writer, with almost a dozen titles to his name including the authoritative Standard English-Urdu Dictionary, Chand Ham Asar, maktoobat Baba-e-Urdu Tauqeedat, Muqadimat, etc.
As a researcher, scholar, critic and lexicographer Maulvi Abdul Haq is an unmatched and unparallel name in the history of Urdu and will always be remembered for his great work in the promotion of Urdu, education and Pakistan. He died on August 16, 1961 in Karachi.
