Chief Minister emphasizes the province will not accept any encroachment on its water rights
KARACHI (Dunya News) – A resolution declaring the construction of Cholistan Canal and five other irrigation projects illegal, citing violation of the 1991 Water Accord, has been passed by the Sindh Assembly.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that these new canal projects threatened Sindh’s rightful share of water.
He emphasised that the province would not accept any encroachment on its water rights.
The resolution calls on the federal government and the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to ensure fair water distribution as per the 1991 agreement.
Murad Ali Shah warned that these projects could lead to an environmental crisis in Sindh, impacting agriculture, the economy, and daily life due to water shortage.
The Sindh government remains firm in its stance, steering that no compromise will be made on Sindh’s share of Indus River water.
