MOSCOW (Shahid Ghuman) — Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said that Western countries are trying to exploit instability in Iran to bring about political change, which she described as a violation of the UN Charter and international law.

She made these remarks during the Foreign Ministry’s weekly press briefing here in response to a question from Dunya News correspondent on Friday.

The Dunya News representative asked her whether Russia believed the US could adopt the same approach it used in Venezuela, and how Moscow viewed the current situation.

Spokesperson Zakharova said that Russia has already presented its stance on this issue, and that the Foreign Minister gave a comprehensive statement on it the previous day. She stated that in the modern era, a policy of regime change was unacceptable, especially for countries that claim to respect the UN Charter.

She said that Western pressure was not limited to the United States and Israel, but that European Union countries were also exerting economic, social, and humanitarian pressure on Iran, with the aim of forcing political change and creating internal instability.

She stated that it is evident that Western countries are attempting to impose illegal change by using the economy and social sphere as weapons — something that should not be acceptable to UN member states. As for what actions the United States might take against Iran, she said that question should be directed to Washington itself.

Iran has repeatedly said in recent months that Western powers are exploiting its internal political situation to achieve external objectives, which Tehran has described as an attack on its sovereignty.
