Sindh Assembly passes resolution declaring Karachi integral part of province

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah rejects statements about dividing Sindh or separating Karachi, vows to defend provincial unity, urges Assembly to support resolution.
KARACHI (Web Desk) – The Sindh Assembly on Saturday passed a resolution firmly rejecting any move to carve out Karachi as a separate province, declaring the city an integral part of Sindh.
The resolution was tabled by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who condemned what he described as divisive statements advocating the breakup of Sindh or the detachment of Karachi. He termed such calls harmful to national unity and contrary to history, constitutional principles and democratic norms.
Addressing lawmakers, Murad Ali Shah said Sindh played a pivotal role in the creation of Pakistan and noted that the Sindh Assembly was based in Karachi at the time. He accused “enemies of Pakistan” of attempting to undermine national cohesion through such narratives.
He recalled that a similar resolution had been passed in 1994 to safeguard Sindh’s integrity. Referring to 1948, when Karachi was made the federal capital, he pointed out that the country had no constitution at the time, adding that under the present constitutional framework, any such move would require a two-thirds majority in the assembly.

The chief minister stressed that the resolution solely aims to protect Sindh’s unity and does not target any political party or individual. He said administrative issues concerning Karachi could be discussed separately, but warned that opposing the resolution would amount to supporting the division of the province.
Citing history, he said Sindh remained distinct even after British occupation of the subcontinent and was later separated from the Bombay Presidency after sustained struggle.
He also referred to President Asif Ali Zardari’s “Pakistan Khappay” slogan, reaffirming that the Pakistan Peoples Party would never act against the unity of Pakistan. He asserted that any attempt or plan to divide Sindh would fail.
