ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – President Asif Ali Zardari has accepted the resignations of Supreme Court Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah, a day after both judges stepped down from their positions.

The Presidency confirmed that the resignation letters, sent directly to the President, have now been formally approved.

The two senior judges resigned on Thursday in relation to the matter concerning the 27th Amendment. According to officials, both judges forwarded their letters to the President shortly after their decision was finalised. A statement issued from the Presidency noted that President Zardari had accepted the departures in line with constitutional procedure.

Before submitting their letters, Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah held farewell meetings with fellow judges at their chambers. These meetings took place late in the evening, where colleagues advised them not to resign and continued efforts to persuade them until the final moments. Despite repeated requests, both judges remained firm in their decision.

Following their meetings with fellow members of the judiciary, the judges submitted their resignations and subsequently departed the Supreme Court building. Their exit marks a significant development in the ongoing debate surrounding the 27th Amendment, with the judiciary now awaiting further steps regarding the appointments to the vacant positions.
