LAHORE (Dunya News) – Air pollution levels in Punjab continue to worsen as winds from India carry hazardous particles across the border, severely affecting air quality in Lahore and other major cities.

According to environmental data, Lahore has once again ranked as the second most polluted city in the world, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching an alarming 471. Some parts of the city have reported even higher readings: Lower Mall 804, Gulberg 758, Sanda Road 745, DHA 724, and Shalimar 585.

Other cities in Punjab are also suffering under thick smog. Gujranwala recorded an AQI of 637, Faisalabad 365, and Multan 245—all falling within hazardous levels that pose serious health risks.

Health experts have urged residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and to wear protective masks when going outside, warning that prolonged exposure could lead to respiratory and cardiovascular issues.

In response to the deteriorating conditions, the Punjab government has revised school and college timings, with all educational institutions now opening at 8:45 a.m. starting today to help minimize early morning exposure to toxic smog.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have appealed to citizens to cooperate with smog prevention measures, including reducing vehicle use and avoiding open burning.
