ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Senate on Monday approved a resolution calling for holding general elections across the country simultaneously amid Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s call for snap polls in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The resolution was tabled by Senator Tahir Bizenjo and it was adopted unanimously as the PTI senators had walked out of the session. Senator Mushtaq Ahmed was only present on the opposition benches.

Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani observed that the resolution was passed unanimously as Mr Ahmed did not oppose it during the proceedings.

It is recalled that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered elections in Punjab on May 14 when a petition was filed by the PTI in this regard. However, the government is reluctant to go into the snap elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where assemblies were dissolved earlier this year by the PTI.

Last week, the parliament adopted a resolution rejecting the top court’s order to hold snap elections for two provincial legislatures in the country.

The motion on Thursday was tabled by legislator Khalid Magsi during a session of the National Assembly.
