ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The federal government has started implementing the Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure Policy, presenting its details to the Senate.

According to the Power Division, two ministries, the Ministry of Industries and Production and the Ministry of Food Security, have been given the authority to make rules and regulations under the policy.

So far, 72 distribution companies have been granted licenses to set up EV chargers. The government has set a goal of establishing 3,000 EV charging stations across the country by 2030.

For the current financial year, the target is to roll out 240 new charging stations, said Owais Laghari. He added that these stations will be set up through a mix of public and private sector investment.

The policy also outlines clear responsibilities: the Ministry of Industries and Production, the Power Division, and NEPRA will oversee the operations of EV stations, and relevant authorities have been given special powers to speed up their establishment.

Experts say the move is a step in the right direction, giving Pakistan a push to catch up with global EV trends and reduce the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
